Programs - Rainbow Kidz Pediatric Program
Rainbow Kidz is a special pediatric program provided by Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County that will help in managing a child’s medical needs as well as the complex needs of the entire family. The challenge of caring for a seriously ill child can seem overwhelming for the family, and often a family does not know where to turn for help. There are many questions, and there seem to be few answers. Rainbow Kidz is available to help with the overwhelming responsibilities, allowing your child to remain at home with family and friends maintaining a familiar lifestyle.
A specially trained team of multi-disciplinary professionals works specifically with children who have life-threatening illnesses. This specialized team cares for anyone from birth to18 years of age. Palliative care for the child can begin at any point in the illness or disease, and the child can continue to seek curative treatment.

A nurse will come to your home and help with the medical management of the care of your child. A social worker will work with your child and other family members on coping with the illness. A chaplain is available to discuss spiritual questions and issues. Home care aides can help with patient care and light housekeeping. Volunteers are available for any type of help including companionship for the patient or other children, transportation, errands, story reading or providing a break for the parent or caregiver.
As a child’s condition changes, he or she can be discharged from Hospice and return at a later date if necessary.
As part of the Rainbow Kidz program, each year, Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County host, at no cost, one-day camps for children and for teens who have experienced the loss of a friend or loved one. Post death grief services include facilitation by a professional child therapist, bereavement counselor, and for the children – a professional clown, and puppy therapy. The camp is open to any child or teen in the community, regardless of whether or not the family was served by hospice.
