Programs - Palliative Care and Consultations Palliative (pronounced "PAL-ee-uh-tihv") care is a model of care aimed at achieving the best possible quality of life for patients and their families throughout the course of any life-limiting illness by providing relief from pain and other distressing symptoms. Palliative care can be defined simply as caring for people without trying to change or cure them.
Palliative Care is very similar to hospice care, but distinct in two important ways:
- Palliative care can start at any point in an illness, not just at the end of life
- Palliative care can co-exist with measures to cure or provide active treatment for a chronic disease. Beginning in 2005, Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County started providing palliative care consultations to patients in settings as varied as the hospital intensive care unit, home or skilled nursing facilities, and its Gordon Hospice House.
